Charity Suffereth Long and Is Kind

for-tcms-3

I seek to emulate Jesus Christ in the way He loved.  The pure love of Christ is called Charity.  We read about this love in the Bible, 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13.  In the next few days, watch for posts about this vital attribuite of Christ.  When we seek to emulate Him by loving as he loved, we change hearts, are happier, and each of us can be a more positive INfluence on others.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind.  –1 Corinthians 13: 4

TODAY’s ChangeMakers can be very kindhearted.  It is important, however, to be sure there are no misunderstandings about this attribute.

In Oct 1991, Aileen Clyde stated it this way, “It is not charity or kindness to endure any type of abuse or unrighteousness that may be inflicted on us by others. God’s commandment that as we love him, we must respect ourselves, suggests we must not accept disrespect from others. It is not charity to let another repeatedly deny our divine nature and agency. It is not charity to bow down in despair and helplessness. That kind of suffering should be ended, and that is very difficult to do alone. …We must be willing to let others help us.”

4-kind

TODAY’s Affirmation:  I am TODAY’s ChangeMaker*.  Although I may have suffered a lot of things, I am kind to myself as well as to others.

Spiritual Vitality: The face of Jesus is like an open door.

Vector background with grass

My Brite Star granddaughter loves to draw. She has quite the gift to draw meaningful pictures.

Today, I was reviewing a journal entry I made in 2015.  She had recently turned nine and said something that is still very precious to me.

She said, “Now I know the secret to drawing Jesus face!  Don’t make it too stern. Make it like an open door.”

I asked, “What does an open door mean to you?

She responded, “Like an open door.

Jesus face is supposed to be kind, letting you in, like an open door, not stern.”

I love that she is learning the truth about the character of Jesus. When we want to approach Him with real intent, and sincerely ask in faith for the desires of our heart that are in alignment with His will and teachings, He lovingly lets us in.

In an article written by Tanja Pajevic after the recent massacre in Florida, “Grieving After Orlando: 5 Ways To Take Care Of Yourself“, one thing she mentioned is, “Recommit to your personal values. Consider the legacy you’d like to leave behind. Will it be love? Kindness? Recommit to the people and the values that bring joy and meaning to your life.”

The power of kindness and love is remarkable! It has a positive ripple effect, and the influence of our kindness can ripple through generations!

Do we think of the face of Jesus as if it were an open door? Do we feel that forgiveness and help is readily available to each of us? Do we take the steps we need to take through prayer and communication with Heavenly Father to access Christ’s kindness and mercy. Do we feel of his grace (enabling power)? Being kind to ourselves and others adds stability to daily living.

Knowing that Jesus will enable us to develop this quality within our hearts and allow us to feel His love is a blessing worth reaching for. Let us do one thing today to connect with God and envision the face of Jesus Christ as if it were an open door.

Judgment?

Families and relationships are in desparate need of added health, healing and happiness  this holiday season.

Some of TODAY’s ChangeMakers look toward holiday get-togethers with happiness and joyful anticipation.

Many of TODAY’s ChangeMakers are dreading the holidays and get-togethers with family and/or friends because of negaitive family patterns (put-downs, sarcasm, bickering, abuse, etc.) and destructive traditions that bring pain to the heart and mind of those who cross the threshold of interacting in social settings.

Whatever your situation, here’s some Food for Thought as we gather together in our holiday celebrations and meet people in stores or on the highways. In fact, it’s good advice the whole year round.

judgment vs charity

Here’s some of the rest of what Thomas S. Monson said:

I consider charity—or “the pure love of Christ”—to be the opposite of criticism and judging. In speaking of charity, I do not at this moment have in mind the relief of the suffering through the giving of our substance. That, of course, is necessary and proper. Tonight, however, I have in mind the charity that manifests itself when we are tolerant of others and lenient toward their actions, the kind of charity that forgives, the kind of charity that is patient.

I have in mind the charity that impels us to be sympathetic, compassionate, and merciful, not only in times of sickness and affliction and distress but also in times of weakness or error on the part of others.

There is a serious need for the charity that gives attention to those who are unnoticed, hope to those who are discouraged, aid to those who are afflicted. True charity is love in action. The need for charity is everywhere.
Needed is the charity which refuses to find satisfaction in hearing or in repeating the reports of misfortunes that come to others, unless by so doing, the unfortunate one may be benefited. The American educator and politician Horace Mann once said, “To pity distress is but human; to relieve it is godlike.”

Charity is having patience with someone who has let us down. It is resisting the impulse to become offended easily. It is accepting weaknesses and shortcomings. It is accepting people as they truly are. It is looking beyond physical appearances to attributes that will not dim through time. It is resisting the impulse to categorize others. …

In a hundred small ways, all of you wear the mantle of charity. Life is perfect for none of us. Rather than being judgmental and critical of each other, may we have the pure love of Christ for our fellow travelers in this journey through life. May we recognize that each one is doing her best to deal with the challenges which come her way, and may we strive to do our best to help out. ~Thomas S. Monson

That Families May Be Blessed

Post Header, 600 x ___ 2, Family, basic unit of eternity
Henry B. Eyring is an amazing man.  He has been an example to me of humble faith and devotion to God and family.  He spoke at the Vatican Summit where faith leaders discussed marriage.  The points he listed at the end of what he said are possible to achieve  if two people are committed to walking together in love.  With faith in God and a commitment to one’s spouse, generations of children can be benefitted and blessed.

I am also a witness of how a single parent can press forward in faith and still influence children for good.  We still need to know how to be faithful IN family settings and, by listening to his words, we can help our children gain insight and understanding, too.  If you are one that has carried heartache and heartbreak–even from childhood–his words may help you make sense, clearly, of what was missing or what went wrong.

Let’s change the  trend of destructive thoughts, words and actions that we carry into marriage and relationships.  Henry B. Eyring suggests how it is possible.  I encourage you to listen to his words.

Because of HIM

Share the message of Easter.

What touches your heart the most in this video?

I am a writer, and now I’ll be re-writing the last page of my life’s story. I’ve decided to write something different. The end of most books say “THE END”. After watching this video, I’ve decided to write …there is no end because of Jesus Christ.

My greatest joy and deepest heart’s desire has been to teach my children (and now, my grandchildren) about Jesus Christ. His life and mission give purpose and meaning to the bigger picture of our own lives. Because I know this, I’ve wanted my children to have the opportunity of knowing this for themselves.

Thus, the last page will be a message of hope. There is NO END.

Let me know what touches you most in the comments. Enjoy the video.

About Carolyn Calton

I Feel My Savior’s Love

I have been consoling a loved one who is going through agonizing pain. I remember the days, years ago, when my own heart was breaking. I would sit in my green rocker, and while holding my baby and rocking and rocking I would sing this song of hope, commitment and peace (click video) . I struggled to keep my perspective. It was comforting, and wisdom eventually emerged from the pain of long ago. I am grateful for the life, teachings and mission of Jesus Christ–who can set all things right, for the innocent and even for the offenders, if they call upon his name in prayer with  humility in their heart and align themselves with His teachings. Hope you enjoy the video.

You’re Not Alone

My heart goes out to those who are entrapped in the vicious cycles of addiction, suffering and pain.  Christ is the Master Healer.  It’s interesting to me that we try everything to get rid of the physical and emotional feelings that distrub us, yet often forget that it’s our Elder Brother, Jesus Christ (son of God the Father-our creator), who makes the way for us to be healed spiritually so that joy and happiness can once again be ours.  It’s my hope that this video reaches those who are forlorn, unhappy and seeking the way back to being whole and healed.

Thank you to Betsy Love who pointed out this video on Facebook.

The greater the struggle, the more glorious the triumph!

I am a firm believer in creating positive change. This short film is very powerful.

Exerpts from the short film The Butterfly Circus.

Limbless Man: “Stop it! Why would you say that?”
Showman: “Because you believe it, but if you could only see the beauty that can come from ashes.”

The limbless man is shown some traumatic conditions from which the now happy, talented performers in the Butterfly circus had come.

Limbless Man: But they’re different from me! ”

Showman : “Yes.YOU do have an ADVANTAGE. The greater the struggle, the more glorious the triumph.”

I encourage you to take the time to view this short film.

Story
At the height of the Great Depression, the showman (Eduardo Verastegui) of a renowned circus leads his troupe through the devastated American landscape, lifting the spirits of audiences along the way. During their travels they discover Will (Nick Vujicic), a man without limbs at a carnival sideshow, but after an intriguing encounter with the showman he becomes driven to hope against everything he has ever believed.  (words from www.thebutterflycircus.com)
