Unsteadiness

Spiritual ReNEW YOU, FB 3- yellow. all-free-backgrounds

My life’s experiences with emotional turmoil have led me to study, love and be INlightened by scripture references that have to do with the heart When we regard our heart symbolically as the center of our emotions, feelings and devotions, we can see teachings about the heart all throughout the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

Although written over two thousand years ago, I think you’ll see that these words have application, even today.  Here are the words of Helaman as he laments because he has seen the goodness of God in his life, and he knows and remembers the goodness of God in the life of his ancestors-through their written records and stories–yet his people have faced much war and pestilence because they continue to turn away from God after they prosper.

Helaman records:

And thus we can behold how false, and also the unsteadiness of the hearts of the children of men; yea, we can see that the Lord in his great infinite goodness doth bless and prosper those who put their trust in him.

Yea, and we may see at the very time when he doth prosper his people, yea, in the increase of their fields, their flocks and their herds, and in gold, and in silver, and in all manner of precious things of every kind and art; sparing their lives, and delivering them out of the hands of their enemies; softening the hearts of their enemies that they should not declare wars against them; yea, and in fine, doing all things for the welfare and happiness of his people; yea, then is the time that they do harden their hearts, and do forget the Lord their God, and do trample under their feet the Holy One—yea, and this because of their ease, and their exceedingly great prosperity.

And thus we see that except the Lord doth chasten his people with many afflictions, yea, except he doth visit them with death and with terror, and with famine and with all manner of pestilence, they will not remember him.

O how foolish, and how vain, and how evil, and devilish, and how quick to do iniquity, and how slow to do good, are the children of men; yea, how quick to hearken unto the words of the evil one, and to set their hearts upon the vain things of the world!

Yea, how quick to be lifted up in pride; yea, how quick to boast, and do all manner of that which is iniquity; and how slow are they to remember the Lord their God, and to give ear unto his counsels, yea, how slow to walk in wisdom’s paths!

Behold, they do not desire that the Lord their God, who hath created them, should rule and reign over them; notwithstanding his great goodness and his mercy towards them, they do set at naught his counsels, and they will not that he should be their guide.

Why is it important that we remember God?  Among many other reasons, one reason that motivates me is that someday, we can all return to live in His presence.

On earth, we find ourselves forever longing for peace and happiness.  We may involve ourselves in temporary pleasures only to return to feelings of emptiness.  Our thoughts may wander into paths of self-doubt or hopelessness.  We may not realize that feeding our spirit and getting our “homing beacon” for heaven working again is part of the solution to our longing.

Building on the secure foundation of centering our hope in Jesus Christ and following, as best we can, His teachings will position us to return, after death, to our heavenly home.  Yet, to live in the very presence of God again, where we can find the feelings of true, unpolluted, joy, love and happiness, we must claim the gift of repentance that Christ offered.   It is only by that means that we can allow our heart’s to be purified and worthy to be in God’s presence.  It is a TURNing of the heart toward God and an acceptance of Christ’s grace and mercy toward us that allows this to take place.  We can receive joy instead of misery. It is a beautiful experience that allows us to feel astounding peace, and it’s not something to criticize.

So today, let us reflect upon any unsteadiness found within our own hearts.  Let us be true to our our real selves and to God by TURNing our heart to Him.  By doing so, we turn our heart toward our heavenly home, and toward the great hope we have in Jesus Christ, who made possible the WAY for us to repent and eventually find everlasting joy.

Feeling worthless? Angels watch over you.

I love this quote by George Q. Cannon, “We humble people, we who feel ourselves sometimes so worthless, so good-for-nothing, we are not so worthless as we think. There is not one of us but what God’s love has been expended upon. There is not one of us that he has not cared for and caressed. There is not one of us that he has not desired to save and that he has not devised means to save. There is not one of us that he has not given his angels charge concerning.

We may be insignificant and contemptible in our own eyes and in the eyes of others, but the truth remains that we are children of God and that he has actually given his angels … charge concerning us, and they watch over us and have us in their keeping.”

Need Hope?

I love this song!  Maybe you can relate, too.

“I might be down, but I’m not dead….There’s a light, and I still see it….Even after all I see, there’s hope.”

My hope is in God.  I will sincerely ask for, gratefully receive and willingly follow His guidance and direction.

The greater the struggle, the more glorious the triumph!

I am a firm believer in creating positive change. This short film is very powerful.

Exerpts from the short film The Butterfly Circus.

Limbless Man: “Stop it! Why would you say that?”
Showman: “Because you believe it, but if you could only see the beauty that can come from ashes.”

The limbless man is shown some traumatic conditions from which the now happy, talented performers in the Butterfly circus had come.

Limbless Man: But they’re different from me! ”

Showman : “Yes.YOU do have an ADVANTAGE. The greater the struggle, the more glorious the triumph.”

I encourage you to take the time to view this short film.

Story
At the height of the Great Depression, the showman (Eduardo Verastegui) of a renowned circus leads his troupe through the devastated American landscape, lifting the spirits of audiences along the way. Look to the Light

Light and darkness cannot occupy the same space at the same time.

“It was dark because I didn’t know who I was or where I was going.” Shelley, Model, New York, USA

“It just felt like a dark hole that would never end.” Sal, Contractor, New Jersey, USA

“I was doing things that, you know, made me feel disgusted with myself. On one occasion, I felt so bad that I was impelled to call upon God although I had not prayed in many years.” Victor, Businessman, Jamaica

“. . . it felt like pure love, and at that moment, I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that Jesus Christ lived, and that He was the epitome of love – which I’d been looking for and could never find it. I’d done everything in the world that man had to offer, and none of it was real.” Bill, Businessman, Alabama, USA

“I feel like Christ gave me another chance.” Shelley

“He has brought me from a place I never thought I would be able to crawl out of. In the long run, I’ve noticed that, wherever He has taken me, it’s always been for a better result.” Sal

“There is an eternal plan here. This isn’t everything. I felt that I truly found Christ when I truly repented.” Shelley

“I know that Christ lives, that He is the Savior of mankind. So I believe that the greatest gift I could give to Him is to seek to strive to follow Him.” Sal

“The birth of the Savior means to me that the world has a chance to change. The world has a chance to become what He intended it to become from the beginning. The world has a chance to accept His love and follow Him.”

Today’s Ugly Duckling

When I was young, a well-meaning church leader told the young man I was dating that I was kind of like “The Ugly Duckling” of storybook fame.  I’m certain he was trying to pay me a compliment.  He remarked that I had turned into a very beautiful young woman.  I knew that is what he meant.  I hope you can understand, however, that his comment cut me straight to the heart.

Growing up was a difficult thing for me to figure out.  I didn’t feel like I “fit in”, and every girl desires to be beautiful–which I certainly did not feel.  I was awkward, gangly, and my friend’s mother even said I looked like a “toothpick” in a dress I thought was the prettiest thing I’d ever worn!  I could go on and on, but without saying more, I will simply state that “The Ugly Duckling” story has drawn my attention ever since those days.

Over the years, I have moved beyond that insecure, self-demeaning place. I’ve learned that we all gather false beliefs and self-doubts about who we REALLY are and what we came to earth to do and to give.  I have come to understand more completely who I am and recognize many of the gifts I have that contribute positively to the lives of others. Yet today, I spotted this video, by Dieter Uchdorf about Our True Identity.  He uses the story of the Ugly Duckling as an illustration.  I thought I’d post it, just in case there are those who find it’s message and meaning to be perfect timing for them.  I believe it to be a good reminder for all of us.

Enjoy!
