Flattery and Empathy

LtL- Flattery and empathy, do not confuse

Wow. I gained insight today as I read about a man named Gadianton “who was exceedingly expert in many words.” He used flattery, others bought into it, and it turned out to be more destructive through its ripple effect than could ever be imagined!

I concluded that it’s important that we DO NOT CONFUSE FLATTERY, which is insincere praise, WITH EMPATHY, which is a sincere seeking to understand another’s situation or feelings.

I realized that many good-hearted, empathetic people in our day may confuse flattery with empathy. Many stay in more-than-difficult situations because they see what seems to be good in another person and think it’s empathy, when underneath, in the heart of the other, there is deceit and calculated choices.   Destruction is  brewing.

Developing the quality of discernment is important in our lives today. Discernment is keen perception or insight.  To me, this must be coupled with the influence and insight that comes from God into our own hearts, so that we may see clearly and know clearly what to do next in our lives and in our relationships.

The influence of good-hearted people is needed in our ever-darkening world.  We must continue to shine the light of our positive influence without fear of being used and abused.  To do this, I can see that discernment is needed, so we do not become prey to those with deceitful desires and self-centered, destructive purposes in their hearts.

We must also check our own heart and the methods we use to interact with others.  Do we simply use flattery (insincere praise) to get our own way, or are we truly connecting heart-to-heart through empathy.  We all long to be loved, appreciated and cared about.  Choosing empathy is choosing a path to healthy connections if both parties have empathy in their hearts.  Choosing flattery leaves you feeling emotionally flat and alone–even in a crowd.

Happy Memorial Day. All Gave Some. Some Gave All.

On this Memorial Day, with gratitude, I listened to Ronald Regan’s INspiring words.

These are just a couple take-aways that touched my heart:

“The price for this freedom, at times, has been high, but we have never been unwilling to pay that price. Those who say we’re in a time when there are no heroes, they just don’t know where to look.”

Martin Treptow went to France in 1917
and served with the famed Rainbow division.
“There on the Western front, he was killed, trying to deliver
a message between batalions under heavy artillary fire.
We’re told, that on his body was found a diary.
On the flyleaf under the heading my pledge, he had written these words,

America must win this war, therefore
I will work.
I will save.
I will sacrifice.
I will endure.
I will fight cheerfully
as if the issue of the whole struggle
depended upon me alone.”
***

Regarding freedom:

“We must realize that no arsenal or no weapon in the arsenals of the world is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. It is a weapon that our adversaries in today’s world do not have. It is a weapon that we, as Americans, do have. Let that be understood by those who practice terrorism and pray upon their neighbors.

As for the enemies of freedom, those who are potential adversaries, they will be reminded that peace is the highest aspiration of the American people. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will not surrender for it, now –or ever. We are Americans.” ~Ronald Regan

All gave some. Some gave all. With Gratitude, HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!

Food for thought:
I loved hearing about Private Treptow’s Pledge.
How will you take INspired action?
What is your pledge?
Are you keeping a journal?

That’s What FAITH Can DO

After my morning devotion, my heart was drawn to those in pain who may feel hopeless–like nothing ever works out for them, like they are everlastingly flawed.  I have learned that there is always hope through the everlastingly merciful and forgiving power of Jesus Christ to heal at levels of our soul that we simply cannot comprehend can be healed.  We feel uneasy as a result of the influence of our false or mistaken beliefs about ourselves coupled with our actions.  We either learn to ignore the uneasiness and jump fullly into what we perceive the world has to offer, or we seek the solutions that calm our fears and ease our minds and relieve our burdens in lasting ways.

We do not always fully recognize that the reason so many people “do not feel comfortable in their own skin” is because they need the healing and deep cleansing of the soul that can only come through Christ.  Sometimes, they do not realize that all can be made right, so they stay in misery.  Often they seek solutions in places answers cannot be found.  They may not know where to begin.  It begins with having FAITH in Him who is mighty to save. We learn of His life and teachings through the scriptures.

I love this song by Kutless.  I have witnessed through my own experiences of exercising consistent, enduring faith that these lyrics are true.

“I’ve seen dreams that move the mountains, hope that doesn’t end, EVEN WHEN the sky if falling. I’ve seen miracles just happen, silent prayers get answered, broken hearts become brand new. That’s what faith can do.”

I also appreciate the following lyrics.

You’re stronger than you know,

Don’t you give up now, the sun will still be shining.
You’ve gotta face the clouds to find the silver lining.

Life is so much more than what your eyes are seeing. You will find your way if you keep believing.

Impossible is not a word—it’s just a reason for someone not to try.

Overcome the odds when you don’t have a chance.
When the world says you can’t, it’ll tell you that you can.

Even if you fall sometimes you will have the strength to rise.

I know there IS a way up and out of any difficulty.  Christ is the KEY. ~Carolyn Calton

I hope you enjoy this song by Kutless.

Hope for those with addictions and serious troubles

Here is a message of hope for those with addictions.  Other serious problems are addressed in video #2.  Both videos are full of hope and encouragement.

Video 1:  You Will Be Freed

Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all can be transformed, cleansed, and freed from addiction. (It’s a short 2 minutes and 55 seconds.  Well worth the time. )

Video 2:  Look to the Light

The warmth these people speak of in the video below is “the pure love of Christ” spoken of in the video above.

“Wherever He has taken me is always for a better result.”  “There is an eternal plan here.” “The world has a chance to accept His love and follow Him.”

May God continue to keep you in his watchcare on your journey to Him.
Carolyn

Judgment?

Families and relationships are in desparate need of added health, healing and happiness  this holiday season.

Some of TODAY’s ChangeMakers look toward holiday get-togethers with happiness and joyful anticipation.

Many of TODAY’s ChangeMakers are dreading the holidays and get-togethers with family and/or friends because of negaitive family patterns (put-downs, sarcasm, bickering, abuse, etc.) and destructive traditions that bring pain to the heart and mind of those who cross the threshold of interacting in social settings.

Whatever your situation, here’s some Food for Thought as we gather together in our holiday celebrations and meet people in stores or on the highways. In fact, it’s good advice the whole year round.

judgment vs charity

Here’s some of the rest of what Thomas S. Monson said:

I consider charity—or “the pure love of Christ”—to be the opposite of criticism and judging. In speaking of charity, I do not at this moment have in mind the relief of the suffering through the giving of our substance. That, of course, is necessary and proper. Tonight, however, I have in mind the charity that manifests itself when we are tolerant of others and lenient toward their actions, the kind of charity that forgives, the kind of charity that is patient.

I have in mind the charity that impels us to be sympathetic, compassionate, and merciful, not only in times of sickness and affliction and distress but also in times of weakness or error on the part of others.

There is a serious need for the charity that gives attention to those who are unnoticed, hope to those who are discouraged, aid to those who are afflicted. True charity is love in action. The need for charity is everywhere.
Needed is the charity which refuses to find satisfaction in hearing or in repeating the reports of misfortunes that come to others, unless by so doing, the unfortunate one may be benefited. The American educator and politician Horace Mann once said, “To pity distress is but human; to relieve it is godlike.”

Charity is having patience with someone who has let us down. It is resisting the impulse to become offended easily. It is accepting weaknesses and shortcomings. It is accepting people as they truly are. It is looking beyond physical appearances to attributes that will not dim through time. It is resisting the impulse to categorize others. …

In a hundred small ways, all of you wear the mantle of charity. Life is perfect for none of us. Rather than being judgmental and critical of each other, may we have the pure love of Christ for our fellow travelers in this journey through life. May we recognize that each one is doing her best to deal with the challenges which come her way, and may we strive to do our best to help out. ~Thomas S. Monson

That Families May Be Blessed

Post Header, 600 x ___ 2, Family, basic unit of eternity
Henry B. Eyring is an amazing man.  He has been an example to me of humble faith and devotion to God and family.  He spoke at the Vatican Summit where faith leaders discussed marriage.  The points he listed at the end of what he said are possible to achieve  if two people are committed to walking together in love.  With faith in God and a commitment to one’s spouse, generations of children can be benefitted and blessed.

I am also a witness of how a single parent can press forward in faith and still influence children for good.  We still need to know how to be faithful IN family settings and, by listening to his words, we can help our children gain insight and understanding, too.  If you are one that has carried heartache and heartbreak–even from childhood–his words may help you make sense, clearly, of what was missing or what went wrong.

Let’s change the  trend of destructive thoughts, words and actions that we carry into marriage and relationships.  Henry B. Eyring suggests how it is possible.  I encourage you to listen to his words.

Need Hope?

I love this song!  Maybe you can relate, too.

“I might be down, but I’m not dead….There’s a light, and I still see it….Even after all I see, there’s hope.”

My hope is in God.  I will sincerely ask for, gratefully receive and willingly follow His guidance and direction.
